EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTIVES TABLETS
EC is a way to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. Often called as the morning-after pill, emergency contraception pills (ECPs) are hormone pills that women can take after having sex. There are different types of ECPs. One type, levonorgestrel works best up to 72 hours after having unprotected sex, but will reduce the risk of pregnancy if taken within 120 hrs after unprotected sex. ECPs work by delaying ovulation (the release of an egg during a girl's monthly cycle). If fertilization and implantation have already happened, levonorgestrel won't interrupt the pregnancy.
Levonorgestrol :
-
- It is used by women to prevent pregnancy after birth control failure (such as a broken condom) or unprotected sex. This medication is an emergency contraceptive and should not be used as a regular form of birth control. It is a progestin hormone that works mainly by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation) during menstrual cycle. It also makes vaginal fluid thicker to help prevent sperm from reaching an egg fertilization and changes the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg.
- Dosage : Emergency - One tablet of 1.5 mg orally once or two tablets of 0.75 mg orally, taken 12 hours apart-Doses should be taken as soon as possible within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse or known/suspected contraception failure.
- Mode of action : The primary mechanism of action of levonorgestrel as an emergency contraceptive pill is, to prevent fertilization by inhibition of ovulation and thickening of the mucosa of cervix.

Levonorgestrol + Ethinyl Estradiol :
-
- This medication also causes changes in your cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus This combination hormone medication is used to prevent pregnancy. It contains 2 hormones: levonorgestrel (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen). It works mainly by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation) during menstrual cycle.
- Dosage : For a 28 day package, one tablet is taken daily for 28 days and a new package should be started on the following day. For a 21day package, one tablet is taken daily for 21 days followed by 7 days with no medication.
- Mode of action : Combined ECPs containing the estrogen ethinyl estradiol and the progestin levonorgestrel can inhibit or delay ovulation. There are biochemical alterations in the endometrium confirms that that combined ECPs may act by impairing endometrial receptivity to subsequent implantation of a fertilized egg. Also possible mechanisms include interference with corpus luteum function; thickening of the cervical mucus resulting in trapping of sperm; alterations in the tubal transport of sperm, egg, or embryo; and direct inhibition of fertilization.
